Once upon a time I heard these words. The glorious heruka Singhe Shvara, lord of yogis had the wisdom body within which all the blessed tathagata kings of form, sensation, perception, formation and consciousness are embodied into one. He was abiding in the equanimity of an ocean of samadhis, transcending thought, in the realm of the Lord of Display, the supreme figure of the lotus family, the snowy ranges of Tibet. He was dwelling at the upper part of a valley bearing the name Juniper Garden of O-yug, an auspicious and magnificent place filled with splendor where wind and mind is clear, in the Khandro Chigong Dzayi Rawa, a vast forest filled with medicinal plants. During that very time and occasion, it happened on the tenth day of the last month of fall that wisdom, activity and mundane dakinis gathered like cloud banks and he enjoyed an immense ganachakra gathering. That was when Palgyi Lodröma, the chief of the dakinis of Uddiyana, looked upon him with the vajra gaze, prostrated in yogi fashion and spoke these words: "Ema, Ema! In future times what will be the ultimate practice for the practitioners of the essence, the Nyingtig? Which sadhana text will they follow? What will be the ultimate essence upon which they can resolve?" Shri Heruka Singhe Shvara entered for a while the samadhi of the unimpeded space of primordial purity, causing his bodily form to disappear, turning into the nature of light. Please clear the dense darkness of ignorance By the sunlight of your wisdom body. Please assuage the painful heat of samsara By the nectar of your vajra speech. Because of their supplication, in the very moment of having shifted to the samadhi of the spontaneously present expression of awareness, he manifested in actuality a wisdom body and spoke these words with the spontaneous vajra sound of dharmata: Ema ema! In the future times, in the final end of this age, the practitioners who apply themselves to the essential meaning, the Nyingtig, and desire to be liberated in that very same lifetime, should meditate upon me, Chetsun Singhe Shvara. For the preliminary steps, in a place that is utterly remote and magnificent such as a charnel ground, mountain peak, unpeopled snow range, or island, at a special time like the tenth day, the master should manifest himself in the form of me, the guru heruka, from the nature of the ground Samantabhadra. Let me behold the natural face of the basic state, And show me awareness in actuality. In response, the master should inquire: Ema, noble child! When entering the gate of the natural king of the supreme vehicle, the points of samaya, like a dangerous mountain path, are extremely difficult to observe. Will you be able to keep them even at the cost of your life? If you fail to engage in practice as the most vital, the oral instructions will go to waste and the dakinis will be annoyed. Will you be able to practice one-pointedly? The disciples should carefully scrutinize themselves and then take this pledge: Ema, precious guru! Having entered the gate of the king of vehicles, I shall observe the samayas even at the cost of my life! I shall practice the essential sadhana in the correct way! (The master) should then give (the disciples) the nectar of samaya, saying: "Vajra samaya amrita tha tha tha" and seal the vajra oath by saying "Vajra samaya naraken." Then the master should say: Listen, noble children. All compounded things are impermanent, like bubbles of water. All samsaric pleasures, though temporarily seeming to be pleasant, are actually painful, like a ripened poisonous fruit. All the different conditions are never ending, like trying to chase the water of a mirage. All the activities of this life are completely futile, like the good or bad experiences in a dream. The excellent fruition of liberation never reverts back into suffering, like a person recovered from smallpox. The oral instructions of a sacred master are the path for ascending into the palace of liberation, like an excellent staircase. Nonconceptual meditation is the basis for the growth of samadhi, like cultivating a field. Ema, noble child! Generate therefore the attitude of renunciation. Relax your body and mind from within. Remain with your eyes wide open. Rest evenly for a while in the state of nonconceptual attention. Once you have gained control over your thinking, skillfully apply the steps for taking refuge, generating bodhichitta, purifying the obscurations and gathering the accumulations. Next, receive the blessings by means of the guru practice. Imagine that all of appearance and existence is the delightful realm of the great charnel ground. In its center is the disciple, the glorious heruka Singhe Shvara. Above him are a gathering of the majestic lineage masters. Burn the incense of great meat and invoke with the sound of skull drum, thus inviting and dissolving the wisdom beings. At the end, all the lineage masters melt into light and, by dissolving into the disciple, the splendor of blessings blaze forth. Appearances manifest as great bliss. Imagine that the experience of unimpeded wakefulness arises free from reference point. Smear a spot of scent endowed with milk on the three places and stabilize (the blessings) with om ah hung. Next, conferring the elaborate vase empowerment: om In the vase of primordially pure space Dwell the deities of spontaneously present awareness. By conferring the empowerment of the nectar of unity, May the three doors, and the perceiver and the perceived, be purified. Repeat the vowel-consonant and the essence of causation. By sprinkling water from the vase on the four places, imagine that the outer perceived objects are cleared into the body of light, the inner perceiving mind is liberated into great bliss, and that all the nadis are utterly filled with luminous wisdom. Saying om ah hung, place the seal of nonreturn. Next, conferring the unelaborate secret empowerment: ah The bhandha of nadi, prana, and bodhichitta, Is filled with the wisdom nectar of great bliss. By conferring the empowerment of great pervasiveness, May concepts of attributes be self-liberated. Utter the vowel-consonant and a a a. Imagine that by giving the nectar, the nectar essence dissolve into the lamp of the empty bindu in the center of the chakra at the crown of the head. From there the nectar increases tremendously and, by pervading all the nadis, the experiences of bliss, clarity and nonthought arise. Keep vigorously the vase shaped breath. At the end, imagine that all the syllables dwelling within the nadis also dissolve into luminosity and thereby that all concepts of attributes subside into space. Seal by uttering ah ah ah. Next, conferring the very unelaborate sign empowerment: Visualize the body of the disciple to be a five pronged vajra blazing with flaming light and let him assume the vajra posture. With the voice, utter the song of hung and imagine that all of appearance and existence is filled with the forms and sounds of hung. Let the mind cut the thoughts of the three times and rest evenly. When the master utters a forceful phat, emerge from that experience and bring vividly to mind all the physical expressions, verbal sounds and mental joys and sorrows of all the six classes of beings. Then, take rest in space beyond arising, dwelling and ceasing. Next, show a rainbow appearing in the mirror of Vajrasattva and say: Unborn emptiness is like the crystal. Unceasing cognizance is like the rainbow. Realize that their indivisibility, endowed with the core of awareness, Is the definitive meaning of luminosity. Indicate this by saying a a. Then, in order to establish the peg of unshakability, straighten the body erectly, leave the breath effortless, let the eyes gaze wide open into mid-air, and rest the attention, unfixed and loosely, in the state of instantaneously present wakefulness. Seal by uttering hung hung hung. Next, the extremely unelaborate ultimate empowerment: Both the master and disciple should strip their body naked. While the master remains in meditation, cross-legged and with the gesture of equanimity, let (the disciple) focus his attention on the brilliant dark blue letter a, shining like the flame of a butter lamp, in his (the master’s) heart center. When focused, bring down the resplendence of blessings by fiercely uttering hung hung hung. When experience has arisen, cut thinking with phat and relax into the state of nonfabrication. Now, to see that the mind itself is empty, cognizant and endowed with a core of awareness, is to enter the mandala of the three kayas. For the main part, the disciple should, for the body, assume the three postures. For the speech, keep very gentle breathing. For the eyes, look into space with the three gazes. Rest evenly in undivided space and awareness. The master, while in the state of unshakable realization, should say: a By the postures and gazes of the three kayas, The supreme faculty is aimed into space. The sight of manifest dharmata will increase, Reach fullness and the stage of exhaustion. Indicate by saying that. Then seal in nonreturn by uttering a a a. The special blessing, hidden separately: In order to stabilize at the end of the main part of each of the four empowerments, the master should emanate a second bodily form from his body, ali kali from his throat, a from his heart center, and a globule of five-colored light, the size of a thumb nail, from the precious sphere of his heart. Dissolve them into the disciple’s respective places and seal them. Moreover, at this point it is of utmost importance that the mind stream of both master and disciple are pure, so at the outset place persistent emphasis on chanting the Apology of the Ineffable Nature. Next, enjoy the articles of the concluding feast and dedicate the residual. Sing vajra songs and make extensive aspirations. This is called ‘imparting the oral instructions in the manner of empowerment’ and is thus a unification of ripening and liberation. a Now follows Taking the Master’s Blessings as the Path: Stay in strict retreat in an extremely secluded place and purify your being by means of the preliminaries. Expel the stale breath and rest your mind in naturalness. From the state of primordial purity, visualize yourself as Singhe Shvara, the innate deity inseparable from your master. Visualize him like this: He sits upon a lion throne, lotus and sun disc and has the wrathfully smiling and playful expression of a yogic practitioner. His skin is reddish. He sits in cross-legged position in equanimity. He is adorned with silks, jewels and bone ornaments. Each of the pores on his body emanate flames of indestructible wakefulness together with tiny herukas that burn away all maras and obstacle makers. As retinue, he is surrounded by the masters of the three transmissions and a gathering of dakas and dakinis. A bliss whorl spins fiercely within the source-of-dharmas between his eye brows. In the sky before him, is Vimalamitra, joyfully seated as the lord of the family. All of appearance and existence throngs and scintillates with rainbows rays and spheres. Invite and dissolve the wisdom beings. Then make this supplication to the master before you: Having perfected the four visions of luminosity, You manifest as the five kayas of unchanging awareness. Radiantly pure form of the great transformation rainbow body, Oh immortal Vimalamitra, Think of me with loving compassion, Come in person to bestow your blessings right now. om ah hung guru vimalamitra hung hung When experience dawns, receive the four empowerments. At the end, imagine that he melts into light and, by dissolving into the whorl of joy in the point between the eyebrows, he becomes a white sphere, the size of a pea, marked with the letter a. The blessings of all objects of refuge, the ocean-like Precious Ones, and especially the blessings of the three secrets of all the lineage masters of Ösel Nyingtig, the Luminous Heart Essence, are invited and shower down intensely in the form of bodies, seed syllables, and attributes. Imagine that they dissolve into the sphere and pervade your entire body. Once again, the light shines forth, pervading all the infinite impure realms. Imagine that the animate and inanimate, the worlds and the beings, are transformed into infinite pure realms. Dissolve entirely all the worlds and beings that were visualized as pure realms and absorb them into your body. Imagine that your body also vanishes into light and dissolves into the sphere between your eyebrows which then becomes extremely brilliant. By resting your attention on that for a long time, the state of samadhi in which the waves of thought have subsided arises free from limit or end. At the end, (let the sphere disappear) like a rainbow vanishing into the sky, and rest evenly in the state beyond focus. Now, understand this: All your present perception is created by conceptual mind. Your conceptual mind involved in sensation perceives vividly while not existing. Its nature lies beyond the reach of thought. To see, with your individually self-cognizant wakefulness, that it has no foundation, that is the natural state of all things, the uncompounded and primordially pure depth of clarity. Having understood this, engage in the yoga of space; train in not being separated from the true meaning in the manner of nonmeditation. When the perceptions of your six sense cognitions appear vividly, do not judge them but undo your effort into the innate state of your own essence, and experience them like person who has completed his work. At this point, the signs of taking control over mind and prana will manifest effortlessly and you abide calmly (in shamatha) because of having accomplished luminosity insight (vipashyana). The one who practices this yoga for one week while abandoning all distractions, will in actuality, in a visionary experience, or in a dream be blessed by Vimalamudra (Vimalamitra) who has attained the wisdom body of a mahasiddha and by myself, Singhe Shvara. He (the practitioner) will then understand numerous profound words and meanings that were previously unknown and he will without a doubt achieve entrance to samadhi. sha These are the subsidiary aspects of the path: As a prelude, at the level of four fingers below your navel visualize Vajrasattva and imagine that the recitation of the mantra causes the fire of wisdom to blaze forth whereby it pervades all the places of the four chakras, burning away the four obscurations. At the end, it touches the syllable hang at the crown of your head whereby the stream of nectar that embodies all buddhas flows down replenishing the places of the four chakras and sublimely satisfies the guru mandalas of the four kayas. Imagining this, utter mahasukha vajrasatva a hang. During the daytime, practice the spontaneous presence while capturing mind and prana in the net of the vajra chain by means of the key points of gate, field, wind and awareness. At night, focus your attention one-pointedly upon the sphere with the syllable a in your heart center or between the brows and practice the luminosity. Before dawn, expel the breath by uttering ha ha and rejuvenate awareness by directing your mind, eyes and breath unwaveringly to the center of space, towards the brilliant and shining letter a of the great self-existing secrecy. At all times, train in self-liberation, dissolving all conceptual thinking, like clouds vanishing into the sky, by means of sustaining instantaneous self-awareness. If you fail to attain the supreme state within this life, then pass away through the practice of the threefold sky. Or, focus your attention one-pointedly on the prana-mind sphere with the letter a, dissolve it into the master’s heart center and journey to Blazing Fire Mountain (Meri Barwa) and the like. But, if you do go through the bardo experiences, no matter what occurs remember the key point of awareness unshakable from its natural abode, like unwavering golden scalpel. When engaging in some degree of elaboration, enjoy the gathering of the feast circle at the appropriate occasion. In particular, to supplicate the master assiduously, with intense and genuine devotion, is the most eminent among all means of dispelling obstacles and bringing forth enhancement. Take renunciation to heart. Bring forth the power of devotion. Bring about unendurable compassion. Adhere to the available nectar of the habitat. Dissolve elaborations from within yourself. Leave your breath uncontrolled. Don’t depart from the postures of body. Direct the supreme faculty into space. At times, keep the gentle vase-shape. At all times, maintain the naked state of empty awareness and focus on that as the vital point. This was condensed to the essentials. Resolve your questioning about the complicated with the Nyingtig teachings. Receive the subtle details from your master. sa By endeavoring assiduously in this way, at best within six months, or next best in twelve years, your conditioned body will dissolve into light. Sounds and words will dissolve into the central channel. Your thoughts will dissolve into the inner luminosity. If you wish, you will accomplish the most eminent of all types of body, speech and mind. Therefore, exert yourself in nothing but this. ma In the future, when the five degenerations are rampant and the threat of invading barbarians is about to obliterate the Buddhadharma in Tibet and Kham, a yogi devoted to the meaning of Nyingtig will appear. On the outside he act quite in accord with all commoners while his innermost lies inscrutable to anyone. Nothing will be able to challenge his direct experience of the illusory nature of all conditioned things. His forehead will be adorned with the seal of a daka. Having been blessed by the master Manjushrimitra, the treasure of discriminating knowledge overflows into whoever connects with him. In particular, he will find certainty in the definitive meaning and possesses a steadfast, unswerving and wholehearted devotion to me and my flawless system of teachings. I teach this for the sake of the person by the name Ösel Trulpey Dorje, who will appear a long time from now. Dakinis of the space of wisdom, for that aim and purpose, retain for a while these syllables of the fivefold expanse. When the time arrives, awaken him by blessing his being.
